Fue all\u00e1, en los predios del piment\u00f3n y de la vera, donde tuvo noticia de la realizaci\u00f3n de un deseo largamente acariciado. Su hijo, Felipe II, logr\u00f3 una victoria singular contra el franc\u00e9s. M\u00e1s de doce mil hombres del condestable Montmorenci fueron aniquilados por los temibles tercios de infanter\u00eda hispanos. La batalla de San Quint\u00edn (1557) tron\u00f3 como la victoria salvaje de las armas hispanas que fue. Nadie pod\u00eda prever las consecuencias. Tras ella, y conmemorando la festividad de San Lorenzo, se construy\u00f3 El Escorial, eje de la proporci\u00f3n a\u00farea, muestra del poder omn\u00edmodo de los Habsburgo, sede de teor\u00edas esot\u00e9ricas y pudridero de reyes de dinast\u00edas distitntas, pero sobre todo lugar de referencia del segundo de los felipes de la casa de Austria. Siempre que visito sus piedras centenarias, \u00e1vido de frescor estival y de mirada hacia Cl\u00edo, recuerdo una frase. Se dice, y si no es cierto est\u00e1 muy bien narrado, que cuando el antiguo emperador ya en pleno declive f\u00edsico y vital, supo de los hechos de San Quint\u00edn hizo una pregunta al aire. Una que lo defin\u00eda a la perfecci\u00f3n: \u00bfY cu\u00e1ndo tomamos Par\u00eds?<br>El suceso, que no ocurri\u00f3 de ning\u00fan modo, es muestra de su ambici\u00f3n y tenacidad pol\u00edtica. Esta frase representa la diferencia entre el sentir guerrero y medieval de Carlos V y el m\u00e1s pausado y estrat\u00e9gico, por evitar el t\u00e9rmino de prudente tan manido, de Felipe II.<br>Por eso cada vez que me protejo en las sombras de la explanada frente al edificio herreriana pienso: y cu\u00e1ndo tomamos Par\u00eds. La vida, la guerra, el amor y la honra ya no son lo que eran.
